TESA / PESA — Sperm Retrieval
Surgical sperm retrieval procedures for men with azoospermia (no sperm in ejaculate). Sperm retrieved from the testis (TESA) or epididymis (PESA), then used with ICSI.
When Sperm Retrieval Is Needed
Azoospermia (no sperm) can be obstructive (sperm produced but blocked) or non-obstructive (production failure). PESA works for obstructive cases — sperm aspirated from epididymis. TESA samples testicular tissue and finds sperm even in some non-obstructive cases.
When We Use It
- Obstructive azoospermia (vas absence, post-vasectomy, infection sequelae)
- Non-obstructive azoospermia (selected cases)
- Failed/unsuccessful ejaculation
- Anejaculation (spinal cord injury, etc.)
TESA/PESA is always combined with ICSI on the same or scheduled day. Sperm yield can be variable — we counsel honestly about chances.
