What is Endometrial & Cervical Cancer?

Endometrial Cancer

This cancer originates in the lining of the uterus (endometrium). It is one of the most common gynecologic cancers. Typically, endometrial cancer develops in postmenopausal women, but it can also affect younger women. The primary symptom is abnormal vaginal bleeding, especially after menopause. Other symptoms may include pelvic pain and discomfort. Early detection and treatment are crucial for favorable outcomes.

Depending on the stage and individual circumstances, treatment options may include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, or a combination.

Cervical Cancer

As the name suggests, this cancer develops in the cervix, the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. Often, it is caused by persistent infection with certain strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV). For early detection and prevention, regular Pap tests and HPV screenings are essential. There are mostly no symptoms in the early stages, but as it progresses, symptoms like abnormal vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain, pain during sexual intercourse, and unusual vaginal discharge may occur. Treatment options include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy, depending on the stage and type of cancer. Also, there are HPV vaccines to prevent certain virus strains that can lead to cervical cancer.

Symptoms of Endometrial & Cervical Cancer

No two women experience the same symptoms, as it varies from person to person depending on the lifestyle and health of the individual. It’s important to note that many of these symptoms can also be caused by non-cancerous conditions. If you notice any of these symptoms, you are advised to visit your gynecologist for proper evaluation and diagnosis. Here are the common symptoms of endometrial and cervical cancer:

Abnormal Vaginal Bleeding

Any abnormal vaginal bleeding, which can include heavy, prolonged, or irregular periods.

Postmenopausal Bleeding

Any vaginal bleeding after menopause is considered abnormal and should be evaluated promptly.

Pelvic Pain

Pain in the pelvic area, lower abdomen, or back may be a symptom of advanced endometrial cancer.

Painful Intercourse

Any abnormal vaginal bleeding, which can include heavy, prolonged, or irregular periods.

Unexplained Weight Loss

Sudden and unexplained weight loss may occur as cancer progresses.

Unusual Vaginal Discharge

An increase in vaginal discharge that is watery, bloody, or foul-smelling could be a symptom.

Non-cancerous conditions, such as infections or hormonal imbalances, can also cause these symptoms. Regular screenings, such as Pap smears and HPV tests, are crucial for early detection and diagnosis. If you experience any of these symptoms or have concerns about your health, it’s recommended to consult your gynecologist for proper evaluation and guidance.
