It’s a common misunderstanding that only women suffer from infertility. In fact, one-third of infertility issues are contributed by the male partner. So yes, men also suffer from infertility.
What causes infertility in women?
In simple terms, getting pregnant requires three things to work – ovaries, fallopian tubes and the uterus. If you have an underlying problem affecting any of these three, the chances of infertility are high. Irregular/abnormal menstrual cycles and egg production, blocked or damaged tubes, abnormal hormone production, commonly
PCOS and thyroid function, and abnormalities of the uterus are some factors contributing to infertility.

When should I meet a fertility doctor?
If you have been trying to get pregnant for more than a year but have been unsuccessful or when you have doubts about your fertility, it’s a good idea to see a fertility specialist.
How will my doctor find out if my partner and I have fertility issues?
We will take a detailed history, carry out a full clinical examination and then advise appropriate tests. The basic reports will be semen analysis and sonography of uterus and ovaries. Post this, we will make a customised treatment plan for you and your partner.
What are some common infertility treatments?
Since each case is different, there’s no one size fits all. Some require only medications or basic treatment like Intra-Uterine Insemination [IUI] while others may need some form of surgery. If these are not successful or if the problem is severe, Assisted Reproductive Technologies like IVF-ICSI may be advised.
What is Assisted Reproductive Technology?
ART is a form of infertility treatment where reproduction happens outside the body. The woman’s eggs are taken out of the body and mixed with the male partner’s sperms in a petri dish under laboratory conditions. After fertilization happens, the resulting embryo is re-inserted back into the woman’s uterus after which a normal pregnancy continues to full term. This is also called IVF (In Vitro Fertilization)
