Soft Markers on Anomaly Scan
Soft markers are minor ultrasound findings that may indicate slightly increased risk for chromosomal abnormalities. Most are normal variants of no clinical significance.
What are soft markers
Definition and significance
Subtle ultrasound findings (e.g., echogenic intracardiac focus, choroid plexus cyst, mild renal pyelectasis, short femur) that are usually normal but slightly more common in chromosomal conditions. The presence of multiple markers raises concern more than isolated findings.
Common soft markers
What we look for
- Echogenic intracardiac focus (EIF) – bright spot in fetal heart
- Choroid plexus cyst (CPC)
- Mild ventriculomegaly
- Mild renal pelvis dilatation (pyelectasis)
- Short long bones
- Echogenic bowel
- Nuchal fold thickness
When concerning
Risk assessment when markers are seen
Isolated soft markers in a low-risk woman with normal screening usually do not require additional testing. Multiple markers, an isolated marker in a high-risk woman, or a marker with structural anomaly may warrant NIPT or amniocentesis.
Common questions
Frequently asked
If a soft marker is found, is my baby abnormal?
In most cases, no. Isolated soft markers are usually normal variants. The clinical context (maternal age, screening results, other findings) determines significance.
Should I have amniocentesis if a soft marker is found?
Usually not for an isolated marker in a low-risk pregnancy. Reassessment, NIPT, and detailed scanning often clarify the picture without invasive testing.
Do soft markers disappear?
Many do as pregnancy progresses (e.g., choroid plexus cysts often resolve). Some persist – the clinical significance is determined by overall context.
