Planning your birth together

Every pregnancy is different, and so is every birth. Rather than apply a fixed rule, we plan your birth with you — weighing your preferences, your medical and obstetric history, and the clinical picture of this pregnancy. Much of this planning happens during your antenatal care, so that by the third trimester you have a clear, unhurried understanding of your options.

Our approach is evidence-based and unpressured. We explain what supports a safe normal delivery, when a caesarean is the safer choice, and how labour pain relief works — so you can make an informed decision, not one made for you.

Normal (vaginal) delivery

For most women with an uncomplicated pregnancy, a normal vaginal delivery is the safest way to give birth and the one we actively support. Where it is safe, vaginal birth is usually associated with a quicker recovery, a shorter hospital stay, fewer surgical risks and earlier feeding and bonding with your baby.

We support normal delivery with continuous midwifery and obstetric presence, freedom to move and change position in labour, and careful monitoring of you and your baby throughout. Labour is not always predictable, and occasionally a caesarean becomes the safer option during labour — if that happens, we explain why and act without delay.

When a caesarean is recommended

A caesarean section is a safe and sometimes life-saving operation, and it is the right choice in specific situations. It is never a “failure” — it is a tool we use when it is genuinely the safer route for you or your baby.

Common, evidence-based reasons for a planned or emergency caesarean include the baby lying in a breech or transverse position when turning is not suitable or successful, placenta praevia (a low-lying placenta), certain concerns about the baby’s wellbeing in labour, labour that does not progress safely, and some maternal medical conditions or multiple pregnancies. We follow recognised indications and avoid unnecessary caesarean sections — in line with WHO and RCOG guidance, the goal is the right delivery for your situation, not a routine one.

Pain relief in labour, including the epidural

You have choices for managing pain in labour. Many women begin with breathing techniques, movement, position changes and continuous support, and step up to stronger pain relief if they wish. The most effective option is an epidural — often described as “painless” labour — which substantially reduces labour pain and is available at Balaji Horizon with 24×7 anaesthetist cover.

To be clear and honest: an epidural greatly reduces pain rather than removing every sensation, and you may still feel pressure. It is a widely used, well-studied and safe option for most women. We will discuss the benefits and practicalities with you in advance so the choice is yours.

Birth after a previous caesarean (VBAC)

If you have had a caesarean before, a vaginal birth in a future pregnancy (VBAC) is possible and safe for many women. Whether it is right for you depends on the reason for your previous caesarean, your history and this pregnancy. We discuss VBAC and planned repeat caesarean with you individually, with the evidence on both sides, so you can choose with confidence.

Your birth plan

We welcome a birth plan. Writing down your preferences — for pain relief, who is with you, and how you would like labour managed — helps us care for you the way you want, within what is safe for you and your baby. Birth plans stay flexible: if the clinical situation changes, we talk it through with you and adapt together.

Safety: our team and facilities

Safe birth depends on the right team being ready at the right moment. Balaji Horizon provides 24×7 obstetric and anaesthetic cover, a modern delivery suite and operating theatre, continuous monitoring, and newborn care on site — led by Dr. Priyadatt Patel and Dr. Shreya Iyengar Patel. If your pregnancy needs closer monitoring, our high-risk pregnancy care team plans your delivery in detail. Please also read our guidance on warning signs and when to call us.

Frequently asked questions

Do you support normal delivery at Balaji Horizon?
Yes. For most women with an uncomplicated pregnancy we actively support a normal vaginal delivery, with continuous monitoring and support in labour, and move to a caesarean only if it becomes the safer choice.
Is an epidural (“painless” delivery) available?
Yes. An epidural is available with 24×7 anaesthetist cover. It substantially reduces labour pain — though it reduces rather than removes all sensation — and is a safe, widely used option we discuss with you in advance.
When is a caesarean section necessary?
A caesarean is recommended for specific reasons such as a breech or transverse baby, placenta praevia, concerns about the baby’s wellbeing, labour that does not progress safely, or certain maternal conditions. We follow recognised indications and avoid unnecessary caesareans.
Can I have a normal delivery after a previous caesarean (VBAC)?
Often, yes. VBAC is safe for many women depending on the reason for the earlier caesarean and your history. We assess this individually and discuss VBAC and planned repeat caesarean with you.
Who decides whether I have a normal delivery or a caesarean?
You do, together with your obstetrician. We give you the evidence and our honest recommendation for your situation; the decision is shared, and we respect your birth plan within what is safe for you and your baby.
