When should I start antenatal care?
Ideally before conception, with pre-pregnancy counselling and folic acid. If you are already pregnant, book your first appointment early, ideally between 6 and 10 weeks, for a dating and viability scan and a baseline assessment.
What is the most important first-trimester action?
For women at increased risk of pre-eclampsia, starting low-dose aspirin when advised by their obstetrician, usually between 11 and 14 weeks, is one of the most effective preventive steps; the benefit is much smaller if it is started after 16 weeks. Folic acid is recommended for every woman until 12 weeks.
When should I be concerned about reduced fetal movements?
Get to know your baby’s usual pattern of movements. If the movements slow down, change or stop, contact the hospital straight away: do not wait until the next day and do not rely on a home Doppler. There is no set number of kicks to count; any reduction from your baby’s normal pattern should be checked the same day.
