Do all fibroids need treatment?
No. Most fibroids do not need treatment. Indications for treatment include heavy bleeding affecting quality of life, severe pelvic pain, pressure symptoms, fertility issues with submucosal fibroids, and rare suspicion of malignancy.
Hysterectomy or myomectomy?
Myomectomy removes the fibroids and keeps the uterus, so it is preferred when fertility is desired or you wish to keep your uterus. Hysterectomy is definitive but irreversible. Fibroids that grow into the cavity (submucosal) are usually removed hysteroscopically, through the cervix, rather than laparoscopically.
Can I get pregnant after a myomectomy?
Yes. Most women can conceive after myomectomy. The wait before trying is usually 3 to 6 months, depending on the depth of the incisions in the uterine wall, and a caesarean birth may be recommended depending on the extent of full-thickness incisions.
