What Is IUI?

A Less Invasive Path to Pregnancy

IUI (Intrauterine Insemination) places washed, concentrated sperm directly into the uterine cavity around ovulation. It bypasses the cervix and gives sperm a head-start — useful for couples where sperm count is borderline, ovulation is irregular, or cervical/unexplained factors are present.

IUI is NOT a watered-down IVF. It is a different procedure with different indications. Done in the right patient at the right time, it works. Done in the wrong patient, it delays IVF unnecessarily.

Who Benefits Most

When IUI Is the Right Choice

PCOS / Anovulation

Letrozole-based ovulation induction + timed IUI is highly effective for PCOS-related subfertility.

Mild Male Factor

Moderate sperm count or motility issues. IUI concentrates good sperm to where they need to be.

Unexplained Infertility

Up to 3 cycles of IUI before escalating to IVF (per ESHRE-ASRM guidance for younger couples).

Cervical Factor

Hostile cervical mucus or cervical surgery history. IUI bypasses the cervix.

Donor Sperm Programs

IUI is the standard approach when donor sperm is used (single women, same-sex couples, severe male factor).

Sexual Dysfunction

When intercourse-timed conception is difficult.

Our Protocol

How We Run an IUI Cycle

Letrozole-first, monitored, and timed precisely.

Day 2-3 baseline ultrasound + hormonal check

Confirm cycle suitability and rule out cysts.

Letrozole 2.5-5mg from Day 3-7

First-line ovulation induction. Better OHSS profile than clomiphene.

Follicular monitoring (Day 10-12 onwards)

Track follicle growth via TVS. Trigger only when follicle is mature.

Sperm preparation in the IVF lab

Same lab-standard sperm wash and concentration as our IVF.

Insemination (Day 14-16)

Quick, painless procedure. No anaesthesia needed.

Pregnancy test Day 28-30

Beta-hCG blood test. We do not encourage home urine kits too early.

“IUI gets a bad reputation because it is often misapplied. Done at the wrong time, in the wrong patient, with the wrong drug — it fails. Done correctly, with letrozole, proper monitoring, and the right patient selection, it is a genuinely effective and cost-conscious first step.”

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the success rate of IUI?

Per cycle: 10-20% in well-selected patients. Cumulative over 3-4 cycles: 40-50%. Higher in younger women with mild factors. Lower in women >38 or with multiple factors.

How many IUI cycles before moving to IVF?

3 cycles is the international standard before considering IVF. Going beyond 4-6 cycles is rarely productive and delays appropriate care.

Is IUI painful?

No. The procedure takes 5-10 minutes and feels similar to a Pap smear. No anaesthesia or recovery time needed.

What is the cost of IUI in Ahmedabad?

Significantly lower than IVF. Includes scans, letrozole, sperm preparation, and the procedure itself. Discussed transparently in your first consultation.

IUI vs IVF — what is the difference?

IUI places sperm in the uterus. IVF fertilises eggs OUTSIDE the body. IUI is less invasive and lower cost. IVF has higher per-cycle success but is reserved for stronger indications.

Can IUI cause twins or triplets?

Multiple pregnancy risk exists with ovulation induction, which is why we use letrozole (lower multiples than gonadotropins) and monitor follicle count before trigger.
