- Severe or constant abdominal pain
- A severe headache, with or without blurred vision or flashing lights
- Sudden swelling of the face, hands or feet
- A noticeable reduction or change in your baby’s movements (third trimester)
- A gush or steady leak of fluid from the vagina
- Fever, chills, or burning with urine that is worsening
- Persistent vomiting with inability to keep fluids down
- Chest pain, breathlessness, or pain and swelling in one calf
- Fainting, or a fall or injury to the abdomen

Why these signs matter
Each of these symptoms can be the first sign of a condition — such as preeclampsia, an infection, preterm labour, a problem with the placenta, or a clot — where early assessment makes a real difference. Being checked promptly is the safe choice, even if it turns out to be nothing serious.
What to do
Contact the hospital directly using the numbers above, or attend the nearest emergency facility if you cannot reach us quickly. Do not wait for your next appointment, and do not take any new medication to mask the symptom without medical advice. Bring your pregnancy records if you can.
Reduced fetal movements
From the third trimester, you become familiar with your baby’s pattern of movements. If movements reduce, stop, or change noticeably, contact us the same day for assessment — this is one of the most important signs to act on, and it should never be left until morning.
