Breastfeeding Support — First Weeks and Beyond
Breastfeeding is a learned skill — for both mother and baby — and the early weeks determine whether it succeeds. Most early breastfeeding difficulties are technique-related and resolvable with structured support. Pain, low supply concerns, latch issues, frequency anxiety — these are common and addressable. The cultural expectation that breastfeeding is “natural and easy” is unhelpful to women who experience real difficulty in the first weeks. We provide structured lactation support without judgement either way about feeding decisions.
Our approach to breastfeeding support
Every patient receives lactation support starting in the immediate postnatal period — latch assessment, positioning guidance, frequency expectations, common-problem troubleshooting. Where difficulties persist, dedicated lactation consultation is added. The aim is informed feeding decisions, not a single feeding ideology.
First weeks
The first 2–3 weeks are the steepest learning curve. Frequent feeding (often 8–12 times per 24 hours) is normal. Cluster feeding in the evenings is normal. Initial supply establishment depends on frequent effective milk removal. Most “low supply” concerns in the first weeks are actually about feeding frequency, latch, or maternal hydration rather than true supply issues.
Common challenges
Sore nipples and painful feeding usually point to a latch issue, fixable with technique adjustment. Engorgement responds to frequent feeding and supportive measures. Mastitis needs prompt treatment. Tongue-tie evaluation is offered where indicated. Each problem has a structured approach.

Where this fits
Breastfeeding support intersects with postnatal recovery and mental health — feeding difficulties often increase mood vulnerability and vice versa.
