Anaemia β€” a low level of haemoglobin, most often from iron deficiency β€” is common in pregnancy and very treatable. We screen for it, treat the cause, and monitor your response, so that you and your baby are well supported through to delivery.

In short: Anaemia in pregnancy is common and treatable β€” diagnosed with a simple blood count, corrected with iron (oral or IV) and diet, and rechecked before delivery so you enter labour with safe haemoglobin.

What anaemia is and why it happens

Pregnancy increases the body’s demand for iron, and stores are often not enough β€” so iron-deficiency anaemia is the commonest type. Less often it relates to vitamin B12 or folate. It can cause tiredness, breathlessness or dizziness, or be picked up on a routine blood test.

How it is diagnosed

A simple blood count at booking and later in pregnancy detects anaemia and its severity. Further tests identify the cause β€” iron studies, B12 and folate β€” so treatment is targeted rather than generic.

How we treat it

Treatment depends on the cause and severity: iron-rich diet and oral iron supplements for most, with vitamin support where needed. If oral iron is not tolerated or not enough, intravenous (IV) iron is a safe and effective option later in pregnancy. We recheck your blood count to confirm improvement.

Why treating it matters

Well-treated anaemia supports your energy, reduces risks around delivery, and helps your baby’s iron stores. Most women respond well with the right treatment and follow-up.

Frequently asked questions

Why am I anaemic in pregnancy?
Pregnancy raises iron demand and stores are often insufficient, so iron-deficiency anaemia is common. Sometimes B12 or folate deficiency contributes, which is why we test for the cause.
Are iron tablets safe in pregnancy?
Yes. Oral iron is the usual first treatment; if it causes side effects or is not enough, intravenous iron is a safe alternative later in pregnancy.
What if iron tablets do not work for me?
Intravenous (IV) iron can correct anaemia efficiently when tablets are not tolerated or insufficient. We recheck your blood count to confirm the response.
Does anaemia affect my baby?
Treated anaemia is usually not harmful to the baby; significant untreated anaemia can pose risks, which is why we screen and treat it through pregnancy.
