EGG FREEZING VS EMBRYO FREEZING · AHMEDABAD

Both store fertility for later — but they suit different situations. Here’s an honest comparison of flexibility, success and who each suits, so you can plan with clarity and no pressure.

The short answer

Egg freezing stores unfertilised eggs — maximum flexibility, ideal if you don’t have (or don’t want to commit to) a sperm source now. Embryo freezing fertilises the eggs first and stores embryos — historically a slight edge in per-unit success, but it ties the embryos to a specific sperm source. The right choice depends on your situation, age and goals, and we counsel you through it honestly as part of our fertility-preservation programme.

TimingEarlier is better for both — more, better-quality eggs

Why timing and ovarian reserve matter

For both options, age and ovarian reserve are the biggest drivers of how many eggs are collected and their quality — which is why freezing earlier generally gives a better return. We counsel using your own markers, including AMH and antral follicle count, rather than generic averages, so your plan reflects your biology.

What the process involves

Both start the same way: a short course of ovarian stimulation, monitoring, and a brief egg-retrieval procedure. With egg freezing, the eggs are then vitrified (rapidly frozen). With embryo freezing, the eggs are fertilised with sperm in the lab first and the resulting embryos are frozen. Later, frozen eggs are thawed and fertilised, or frozen embryos are thawed, for transfer as part of IVF.

Who each suits

Egg freezing suits women without a current partner, those who prefer to keep options open, and anyone planning fertility preservation before age-related decline or certain medical treatments. Embryo freezing suits couples who have decided on a sperm source and are planning IVF. Many people are well served by either — the decision is personal as much as medical, and we help you weigh it.

Honest counselling — what freezing can and cannot promise

Freezing preserves options, not certainty. It improves the chance of a future pregnancy using your younger eggs or embryos, but it does not guarantee a baby later. We give realistic, age-stratified expectations up front — never inflated success framing — so you can decide with clear eyes. Care is led by Dr. Priyadatt Patel.

Frequently asked questions

Is one more successful than the other?
Embryo freezing has historically had a slight per-unit edge, while egg freezing offers more flexibility. With modern vitrification the gap has narrowed; the best choice depends on your situation.
What’s the best age to freeze eggs?
Generally earlier is better. We counsel using your own AMH and follicle count rather than a fixed age cut-off.
Do I need a partner?
Not for egg freezing. Embryo freezing requires a sperm source at the time of freezing.
How long can eggs or embryos be stored?
They can be stored for an extended period, in line with applicable regulations.
Does freezing guarantee a baby later?
No. It preserves options and improves future chances, but it cannot guarantee a pregnancy.
