Fetal Medicine Scans — From Dating to Doppler

A pregnancy scan is more than a photograph — it is structured medical examination of the fetus, placenta, and amniotic environment. Done properly, scans answer specific clinical questions at specific gestations: is the pregnancy progressing normally, is anatomy developing as expected, is growth on track, is placental function adequate, is delivery planning needed early. ISUOG protocols standardise what each scan should assess and what counts as a complete examination. Equipment matters; operator skill matters more.

Our approach to fetal scanning

All scans at Balaji Horizon follow ISUOG (International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology) protocols. Reporting is structured — patients receive a written report covering every required parameter, not just summary impressions. Where a scan raises concern, the next step (additional imaging, MRI, genetic counselling, referral) is explained in the same conversation. We do not rush the consultation that follows a scan with findings.

First-trimester scans

The dating + viability scan establishes gestational age, confirms cardiac activity, and identifies multiple pregnancies. The NT (nuchal translucency) scan between 11–14 weeks is part of first-trimester combined screening for chromosomal conditions, performed to FMF (Fetal Medicine Foundation) standards.

Second-trimester scans

The anomaly scan around 18–22 weeks is the detailed fetal anatomic survey. ISUOG protocols specify every structure to be examined. Soft markers, when present, are interpreted in context — most are normal variants, but the conversation about their significance is part of the scan visit.

Third-trimester and late scans

Growth scans, doppler assessments, placental and amniotic fluid scans, cervical length scans where indicated — each has specific clinical questions. The 3D/4D wellbeing scan is offered as a parent-experience scan separate from diagnostic monitoring.

Scan types covered

Guidelines we follow

  • ISUOG practice guidelines on fetal ultrasonography
  • FMF certification standards for first-trimester screening
  • RCOG green-top guidelines on fetal monitoring
  • FIGO statements on prenatal imaging

Where this fits

Scans support screening, identify conditions that need attention, and inform procedures when indicated.

A complete pregnancy ultrasound schedule typically includes a dating + viability scan, NT scan at 11-14 weeks, detailed anatomy scan at 18-22 weeks, growth + Doppler in third trimester, with additional scans as clinically indicated.

Explore the Fetal Medicine Programme

Fetal Medicine Scans is part of the broader fetal medicine programme. The main fetal medicine pillar covers the complete pregnancy ultrasound schedule.

Pregnancy scans — what each one is for

Ultrasound is central to modern pregnancy care, and each scan has a specific purpose at a specific stage — dating, screening, the detailed anomaly survey, growth and wellbeing, and 3D/4D imaging. Knowing what each scan does (and does not) assess helps you get the most from them.

Quality over reassurance alone

The value of a scan depends on the skill of the person performing it and the time taken to do it systematically. A thorough specialist scan can detect or exclude problems that a quick look would miss, which is why operator expertise matters as much as the machine.

Note that ultrasound in pregnancy is a diagnostic medical assessment, performed in line with PCPNDT regulations (we do not disclose fetal sex). Explore the individual scans for what each covers and when it is done.
