We support normal (vaginal) birth wherever it is safe, provide skilled caesarean and assisted delivery when there is a clear medical reason, and offer painless labour for women who want it. The mode of birth is decided with you, individually and close to term — it is never guaranteed in advance.

How we decide the mode of birth

There is no single right answer that applies to everyone. The recommended route depends on your history, the position and wellbeing of your baby, the progress of labour, and your own priorities — and it is reviewed as pregnancy and labour progress rather than fixed early. We explain why a particular route is being recommended, and a caesarean is never our default.
