A caesarean section is the birth of a baby through an operation on the abdomen and uterus. At Balaji Horizon it is reserved for when it is genuinely the safer route — either planned in advance for a clear reason, or as an emergency during labour — and never used as a routine default.

When a caesarean is indicated

A planned caesarean may be advised for the baby lying sideways or breech (in selected cases), a low-lying placenta, certain medical conditions, or some pregnancies after previous uterine surgery. An emergency caesarean is performed when labour becomes unsafe for mother or baby. We explain the specific reason in your case rather than offering surgery as a first resort.

What the operation involves

A caesarean is usually performed under spinal or epidural anaesthesia, so you are awake and your partner can often be present. It typically takes under an hour, with careful, layered repair of the uterus — important for any future pregnancy.

Benefits and risks, honestly

When indicated, a caesarean can be life-saving for mother or baby. As major surgery it also carries risks — bleeding, infection, a longer recovery, and implications for future pregnancies — which is why we reserve it for genuine need and weigh these with you transparently.

Recovery and future pregnancies

Recovery takes longer than after vaginal birth — typically a few weeks, with guidance on wound care, activity and pain relief; see postnatal recovery. After one caesarean, many women can consider a vaginal birth next time (VBAC).

Frequently asked questions

Is a caesarean safer than a normal delivery?
Neither is universally safer — it depends on the situation. For an uncomplicated pregnancy, vaginal birth generally carries fewer risks; where there is a clear medical indication, a caesarean is the safer choice.
How long is recovery after a caesarean?
Most women are mobile within a day and recover over a few weeks, avoiding heavy lifting and driving initially. We give written guidance and review healing at the postnatal check.
Can I have a normal birth after a caesarean?
Often yes. A planned vaginal birth after caesarean (VBAC) is suitable for many women and is decided individually — see our VBAC page.
