A twin or multiple pregnancy is precious and very manageable with the right specialist care. It needs closer monitoring than a single pregnancy, which we coordinate between obstetric care and our on-site fetal-medicine unit, so that any issue is found early and acted on.

Why the type of twins matters

Whether twins share a placenta (chorionicity) shapes the monitoring plan, and it is determined by an early scan. Shared-placenta (monochorionic) twins need more frequent surveillance — this specialised fetal assessment, including for twin-to-twin transfusion, is provided by our fetal medicine team.

Extra monitoring

Multiple pregnancy involves more frequent scans for growth and wellbeing, closer watch for high blood pressure and gestational diabetes, and attention to anaemia and nutrition. We schedule these proactively rather than reactively.

Recognising higher risks

Twins carry a higher chance of preterm birth, growth differences and preeclampsia. Identifying these early lets us plan rather than react — and most twin pregnancies, well-monitored, reach a safe delivery.

Delivery planning

The timing and mode of delivery for twins are individualised — based on the type of twins, their growth and position, and your health — and discussed well in advance. A vaginal birth is possible for many twins; for others a caesarean is safer. We explain the recommendation for your situation.

Frequently asked questions

Are all twin pregnancies high-risk?
Twins need extra monitoring and are managed as higher-risk, but many progress well with specialist care. The intensity of monitoring depends on the type of twins.
Will I need a caesarean for twins?
Not always. Many twin pregnancies can aim for vaginal birth depending on the type, growth and position of the babies; for some, a caesarean is safer. It is decided individually.
How often will I have scans with twins?
More often than in a single pregnancy — the exact schedule depends on chorionicity, with shared-placenta twins monitored most closely by the fetal-medicine team.
When are twins usually delivered?
Twins are often delivered a little earlier than single babies to balance safety, with the timing individualised to the type of twins and how the pregnancy is progressing.

Fetal movement (kick count) guide

From the third trimester, knowing the usual pattern of your baby’s movements matters. Use this simple counter during an active period to build that awareness.

Important: if your baby’s movements reduce, stop, or change from their normal pattern at any time, contact us the same day — do not wait until morning. This tool is for awareness only and never replaces being checked when you are worried.
