How amniocentesis is performed
Under continuous ultrasound guidance, a fine needle is inserted through the maternal abdomen and 15-20 ml of amniotic fluid is withdrawn for testing. Procedure takes 5-10 minutes.
When amniocentesis is offered
- High-risk second-trimester screening
- Abnormal NIPT requiring confirmation
- Suspected structural anomaly
- Known parental genetic condition
- Maternal infection requiring fetal infection assessment
- Previous baby with chromosomal abnormality
What to expect
Rest 24-48 hours, avoid heavy lifting and intercourse for one week. Rapid FISH results in 2-3 days; full karyotype in 10-14 days; molecular genetic tests in 1-3 weeks depending on specific test.

Frequently asked
Risks, timing & alternatives for amniocentesis
Amniocentesis samples a small amount of amniotic fluid, usually from 15 weeks onward, to diagnose chromosomal conditions, genetic disorders and some infections. Like CVS it is offered for a specific indication rather than routinely.
The procedure-related miscarriage risk
Performed under continuous ultrasound guidance, the additional miscarriage risk is low. We discuss this number openly and in the context of why the test is being offered, never as a formality.
What it can and cannot tell you
Amniocentesis gives a definitive chromosomal diagnosis and can test for specific genetic conditions when these are being looked for. It is not a general health guarantee; results are interpreted alongside your scans and history.
Alternatives
NIPT is a screening (not diagnostic) blood-test alternative with no procedure risk but lower certainty; CVS offers an earlier diagnosis. We help you weigh certainty, timing and risk for your situation.
